4,000,000,000+. That is the stunning number of magazines mailed through the USPS in 2019, according to Statista. While this is only 7.2% of the 55 billion pieces mailed in 2019, that is a lot of pieces of mail.
Do you know why we have periodicals (aka magazines) class mail? Periodicals status of mail was created in 1792 for newspapers, as a way to disseminate information. Legislation giving magazines the privilege of mailing at second class (now called periodicals class) was enacted in 1863.
Print is not dead, despite that rumors that has been circulating for years. Yes, some stalwarts have folded or changed to a digital-only format. But magazines are still launching.
If you have a magazine that you are contemplating applying for periodicals mailing privileges—which costs far less than standard mail rates with better delivery times–I created a worksheet that includes a lot of information about periodicals privileges. There are bullet points about the benefits of mailing at periodicals rates, restrictions and requirements for applying, what materials and publishers needed for audit, the audit process, and materials needed for audit.

The journey continues.
