Onboarding a new client is always exciting, with a few nerves mixed in.  A new assignment also helps me to look at current consulting work with a different lens.

The first meeting with a client is not when the work begins.  Time has already been spent discussing the project, the timeline, agreeing to goals, metrics and deliverables, and finalizing the contract

While each project is different, some of the onboarding steps I follow are similar.  They might help you, whether you are consulting or starting a new project at work (or personal): 

1. Research the organization’s product lines you will be involved with.  Visit website(s): assess the tone, review the customer journey, test links, registration forms and opt outs.  Review other social media channels as well.  
2.  Research the competition.
3. Create a list of intentional questions for your initial meeting.
4. Listen first during launch discussions. 
5. Decide how you will communicate and track project progress.
6. Stay curious. Ask the hard questions.  That is why your client hired you.
7. Remain flexible, as most projects have unexpected twists.

AI has sped up some of the early steps. But your expertise and follow up is what will keep the project moving forward.
